What is Polished Concrete?

Polished concrete is a highly sustainable, long lasting flooring solution for homes and commercial businesses. This type of flooring can be used with the already existing concrete slab of the property, requiring no other tile or material. The concrete is ground, smoothed and taken to a shine with high-grit polishing tools, giving it a pleasant look. Some of the benefits of using polished concrete include: Long lasting: They can last for many years, often times 100+. Durable: They’re extremely difficult to scratch, dent or damage in any way. Clean: There aren’t mold problems with this kind of floor, and cleanup with soap and water is easy. Beautiful: The concrete mixture known as the “aggregate” can have many different elements and combinations to it. This gives the floor a unique appearance that is visually pleasing. Polished concrete can be done either by using the existing concrete directly, or using a layer of topping slab. How To Choose The Right Equipment For Concrete Surface Preparation

There are a number of factors that need to be considered when choosing equipment for the surface preparation of concrete prior to the floor system installation. Here’a an overview of the top five:  1) What is Being Removed? First, consider what type of material you are trying to remove. Are you working with unsound concrete, epoxy coatings, mastics, paint? This is key to determining the right process for effective removal. A rubbery elastomeric coatings, for example, will require scarification or grinding rather than shotblasting. Next, you need to consider the thickness of the material that needs to be removed. Parameters here can vary, however, a general rule of thumb is that thin film coatings can be removed using diamond grinders, while thick coatings and overlays will likely need to be shot blasted or scarified. 2) The Condition of the Concrete The condition of the concrete can dictate surface preparation steps as well. If concrete is delaminated or crumbling, you will probably need to use methods of scarification or a chipping hammer to get to sound concrete. 3) Surface Profile Once you have your concrete in the right condition, you must determine the surface profile that is necessary for the coatings to properly adhere. There are a few factors that play into this decision. The first is to consider what type of system will be used to coat the concrete. A stain or a thin coating will usually require only a light profiling while thick overlays and self leveling coatings will do best with a heavily texture surface that can only be achieved with a scarifier or shot blaster. Additionally,...

How To Maintain Your Polished Concrete

Even though polished concrete is constructed to have a substantial, yet durable surface, it will eventually wear down and start to lose its shine. This is why the surface needs to be maintained, so that it doesn’t lose its shine and conserves its magnifying exterior. Since polished concrete requires no waxing or sealers, it is much easier to maintain and take care of. Daily maintenance is necessary to keep floors looking clean and polished. This includes dust mopping, to avoid an accumulation of dirt and wet mopping, using a cleaner rather than water, for a more efficient clean. If these simple tasks were completed each day, the polished concrete floor will only continue to shine each day. The most recommended cleaner used for polished concrete floors are neutral-ph cleaners, which are offered through companies such as “Mr. Clean.” Neutral-ph cleaners are recommended because other cleaners contain substances that may deteriorate or dull the concrete floors. Floor pads are also recommended to prevent scratching and other damages. Traffic and usage of the floor also play a huge role in how often it needs to be maintained. Of course high-traffic will require a more consistent cleaning. Simple Tips when Maintaining Polished Concrete: Dust mop daily with a microfiber pad to avoid dirt particles that prevent shine. When wet mopping, make sure to use clean water and clean mops, as well as the neutral-ph cleaner. Clean spills and stains as quickly as possible, so that it does not absorb into the exterior. Give the cleaner time to soak in before wiping away, so that you will get a much more efficient clean....
